Richard M. Ratzan grew up in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons, Columbia University, in 1971, and trained in St. Louis in internal medicine. He qualified for and passed the American Boards of Emergency Medicine in 1989, the specialty he has practiced since 1979. He and his medical school classmate-wife, Susan, a pediatric endocrinologist, have four children. His interest in literature revolves around ethical issues.
